Vividly colored and crafted with unique techniques, ethnic costumes are a powerful symbol of Guizhou’s minority cultures. During the 2025 “China Tourism Day” Grand Parade for Ethnic Unity, people from all ethnic groups in the province showcased the rich hues of Guizhou’s cultural diversity through their traditional attire—bringing the charm of “Colorful Guizhou” vividly to life.

 

貴州省旅游商品協(xié)會會長、省政府“貴系列”專家評審委員會首席綜合專家申敏在接受采訪時指出，貴州的民族服裝不僅美在刺繡，更蘊藏著一套獨特的天然染色體系，其色彩源于植物、礦物、動物染料，體現(xiàn)著少數(shù)民族與自然共生的智慧。

Shen Min, President of the Guizhou Provincial Tourism Products Association and Chief Comprehensive Expert of the Guizhou Provincial Government’s “Gui Series” Expert Review Committee, noted that Guizhou’s ethnic costumes are not only visually striking due to their embroidery, but also embody a unique system of natural dyeing. These colors are derived from plants, minerals, and even animal-based materials, reflecting the wisdom of ethnic communities living in harmony with nature.

 

“可能大家的印象里，貴州的服裝染就是蠟染，是青色的。其實我們貴州的染色技術，顏色有400多種，五顏六色都有?！鄙昝艚榻B說，貴州的傳統(tǒng)染色廣泛使用板藍根、楓香樹葉、五倍子等中草藥材，這些天然材料在發(fā)酵過程中釋放色彩，同時保留本身的藥性功效，成為“穿在身上的健康”。

“Many people assume Guizhou’s textile dyeing is just about batik and the color blue,” Shen explained. “But in reality, our dyeing techniques cover more than 400 different colors—bright and diverse.” He noted that traditional dyes in Guizhou commonly use Chinese medicinal herbs such as Isatis root (banlangen), Liquidambar leaves (fengxiang), and gallnuts (wubeizi). These natural ingredients release their dye through fermentation while retaining their medicinal properties—essentially becoming “wellness you can wear.”

 

常見的青色蠟染使用板藍根葉發(fā)酵而成，具有清熱解毒的作用，長期穿著可預防皮膚??；而黔東南地區(qū)的侗族和苗族部分支系，身著的深紅色服飾則源自楓香樹葉染制。通過與鴨蛋清發(fā)酵，楓香葉還能染出軍綠色；五倍子與蛋清結合則可生成粉紅色。

The familiar blue color in batik is produced by fermenting Isatis leaves, known for their heat-clearing and detoxifying effects, with the fabric offering protection against skin conditions when worn regularly. In Qiandongnan, the Dong people and some Miao subgroups wear dark red garments dyed from Liquidambar leaves. When these are fermented with duck egg whites, they yield an olive green shade. Similarly, gallnuts produce light purple tones, and when combined with egg white, the result is pink.

Unlike the chemical dyes commonly used in modern textiles, Guizhou’s traditional dyes are environmentally friendly, locally sourced, and crafted with refined techniques. “These colors are not just decoration—they reflect each community’s understanding of nature and their cultural inheritance,” Shen said. The dyeing process in Guizhou highlights a harmonious relationship between humans and nature, echoing the traditional Chinese philosophy of the unity of man and nature.
